RV Awning Care

RV awnings are a very popular accessory to have on your recreational vehicle; however, it is very important to take the time to do some preventative maintenance and cleaning. Your RV awning will provide years of reliable operation, but proper care is strongly advised in order to get the most life out of your awning, and to reduce the chance of any costly repairs down the road.

Make sure to carefully follow the manufacturer recommendations found in your awning’s owner manual for instructions on retracting, extending, securing, and cleaning your RV awning. [Please see the awning charts below to download your RV awning manual: Dometic & Carefree Of Colorado.]

The fabrics that are used on awnings are made of acrylic or vinyl, although some have weather shields that are made of aluminum, acrylic, or vinyl wrap-arounds that protect the awning when it is in the traveling position. Vinyl awnings are known to attract mildew. It is important to inspect the awning if it’s been stored for a while for any traces of stains, mildew, and other debris. Carefully clean your awning according to what the manufacturer suggests. We offer many awning cleaners and have put together awning care kits for your specific awning material - vinyl or non-vinyl.

It is important to inspect your awning hardware and awning fabric for signs of excessive wear and tear.  Keep the awning hardware lubricated and clean for a long, hassle-free service. Awning hardware is able to be cleaned with the same cleaner that you use to wash your RV with. If your RV awning hardware is rusted on and is not budging, try and rust breaker chemical. If that doesn’t work, it may be necessary to cut the hardware off and replace the parts. Make sure you also inspect the functionality of all moving and non-moving parts on your awning to ensure that there are no problems on your next trip.  If your awning fabric has rips or tears in it, we strongly advise to repair it as soon as possible to prevent that tear from becoming a much larger problem.

Wind can cause big problems for your awning. You should be prepared for wind at all times, as wind gusts of 20 miles per hour can cause serious damage to your awning. Make sure that you never leave the open awning unattended. If you will not be present at the campsite, or will be inside the RV sleeping, it is advised to store the awning. It’s always best to use an awning tie down system with your awning, as it can potentially save your awning from any unexpected damage caused by gusts of wind.  Always make sure that one end of your awning is lower to allow for water to run off.  If water pools onto your awning fabric, the weight from the water can cause substantial damage.

Remember, that it’s always much easier to do some preventative care on your awning than it is to repair it.

Tips - How To Choose The Right Size Awning

There are several factors and steps you need to take to determine the correct awning size for your specific recreational vehicle. It is important that you take the time to do these steps to ensure you order the correct size awning the first time.

Pop Up Campers

To figure out the correct size awning for your Pop-Up Camper, you must first measure the length of your awning rail.  To ensure that the awning poles have something to push up against, make sure there is 3 inches available on each side of the rail.  The length of your awning rail equals the length of awning you need, assuming that you have 3 inches of space that extends beyond the awning rail.  If there is not 3 inches of space available on each side of your awning rail, you will need to order an awning that is one size smaller than what your rail measures.

 

RV/Fifth Wheel/Travel Trailer/Motorhome

To determine the correct size awning for your RV/5th Wheel/Travel Trailer/Motor Home, you would first need to measure from the center of arm to center of arm.  You would need to ensure that there are no obstructions 3 inches in both directions on of the sides (i.e. baggage doors, windows, lights).  This measurement would determine what length of awning you would need.  Next, you would need to measure the floor line (not including any steps that extend out from it) to the awning rail.  That measurement will determine what set of awning arms you would need.  Please see picture on right.
