Troubleshooting:
Starting in 2016, the manufacturer of the Heco crank handles introduced the HD gear to the construction of the Heavy Duty Heco Crank Handle that is currently available and phased out the old style tapered gear Heco crank. The new gear at the tip of the HD Heco crank handle features a 10-tooth with longer teeth for better grabbing power, to grab further down if the gear in the camper lift mechanism is worn. The new Heavy Duty Heco Crank Handle is interchangeable with the Old Style Heco Crank Handle, as they both fit the same 10-tooth gear mechanism.
When using the Heco crank, the mechanism will turn with only a little applied pressure. If you continue to add pressure, the weld on the crank handle will eventually fail. This is not due to the quality of the crank handle, but is a feature designed to prevent someone from doing further damage to the lift mechanism. If the crank handle does not turn easily or if the weld on the crank handle fails, this is a symptom of a much larger problem with the lift system itself and should be checked out by an RV technician or service center.
If the HD Heco Crank Handle does not fit inside your lift system crank mechanism, please make sure to clean out the gear mechanism before inserting the crank handle. Make sure there are no broken teeth on the mechanism or any teeth from a previous crank handle that may be lodged in there. Wear and tear of the crank mechanism over time may cause some of the metal to wear off and collect inside the crank gear teeth that may cause an improper fit, slippage during cranking or inability to operate the crank. If your lift gear is damaged beyond its usefulness, we recommend replacing it with a new gear before trying to use the HD Heco crank handle to lift the pop-up.
