Ask the Triton Expert
"Why are my surge brakes locking up when I backup the trailer?"
If you are locking up the surge brakes on your trailer you have a problem with what we call the free backing valve. When you back up, you compress the surge brake system the fluid pressure applies the brakes, not allowing you to backup and/or park. The free backing valve is energized when the vehicle is put in reverse and opens the fluid flow relieving the pressure. No pressure, no brakes to stop you from going backward. The center pole of the 7 round plug is this wire that goes to the tow vehicle's reverse lights. Some vehicle manufactures have the wire active for reverse lights on trailers like campers and toy haulers.
If you have problems please check the valve, the tow vehicle wiring and wiring to free backing valve to troubleshoot what is wrong. Make sure the vehicle's wire is activated/on.
On older trailers with a flat five plug, the 5th wire is for this free backing valve. A pig tail wire should be ran to the reverse lights of the tow vehicle or use a converter adapter to go from a flat 5 to a round 7 plug.
