RV De-Winterization Tips, RV Show Clearance And Overstock Items Blowout!
From the Mailbag...
It was a pleasure to meet many of you at the Milwaukee RV Show which took place Thursday, February 26th thru Sunday, March 1st at the Wisconsin Exposition Center at State Fair Park, West Allis, WI. But now that the local RV and camping shows are coming to a close, and the weather is beginning to warm, you know it will be only a few short weeks until the start of camping season. That leaves little time for gathering supplies and planning afternoons for the process of de-winterizing your motorhome, camper, fifth wheel or travel trailer.
Most everyone knows of the term "Honey Do List", but the de-winterization process has its own "To Do" list to follow. When de-winterizing your RV, remember the acronym WIFE (Wash, Inspect/Repair, Flush, Equip). Start with a thorough wash and detail to remove any dust, dirt and grime from last season or from Winter storage. Use a gentle car soap or RV wash and wax soap to wash and protect painted parts and sealants. Specialized bug and tar remover, black streak remover, and mold/mildew stain remover products may be needed to clean stubborn areas.
Next, inspect and repair roof leaks. Check the seams and edges around rooftop appliances and remove old cracked sealant. Apply a self-leveling lap sealant for a new waterproof seam seal. On the inside of the camper, check the function of each appliance, faucet, door and drawer for proper operation. Replace any broken or malfunctioning hardware.
Now comes the most important step, flushing the freshwater system. Drain the fresh water tank, then rinse it out and fill with clean water. Run the water pump to send the clean water through the lines, flushing out any remaining RV antifreeze. Check the water lines for any leaks. Once the clean water has completely flushed through the system, remove the water heater bypass kit to prepare for hot water use. Repair any leaks in the water system. Check the water filter canister and inspect it for cracks. If the filter was left in the canister over Winter and froze, it must be replaced before the next use. Order a new Forest River canister or filter from HannaRV.com! Camco RV Spring Fresh Water System Cleaner is also recommended for a thorough cleaning of your fresh water system. Use as directed. Fill the fresh water tank and drain a few times after sanitizing and before use.
Finally, it is time to stock up and equip your camper with all the necessities for camping season. RV toilet tissue and waste treatment chemicals, sewer hoses, drinking water hoses, water filters, electrical adapters, wheel chocks and levelers. And don't forget new campfire tools, party lights, patio rugs, collapsible containers and all the new camping gadgets.
We hope that you find this information helpful in preparing your RV or camper for the upcoming season.
